Artistic approach
Photographing means a lot to me. For the past five or six decades, I have been exploring the human and geographical boundaries of the world around me.
I photograph, which means that I am on a quest. Through the daily life of my contemporaries that I visit, I try to reveal their uncertainties and the hidden connections between them, themselves and their environment.
It is the « in between" that interests me; the fault that is also a passage, the interval, the gap where the light transits. The thread that links, despite everything, life and death, old age and the future, the exile and his roots, reason and illness, the jinx and the horizon, the hope of living together and the harshness of the city.
To do this, I need time, so I wander around, as long as it takes; I allow myself to be completely open and surprised so as to capture fragments of it. These images are then linked to my photographic stories.
The dramaturgy I use underlines the moral strength and the capacity of resilience of the people and the situations I photograph.
They act, they do not give up existing, they are facing the situations.
Each encounter is like a reflection of a part of myself.
I consider each new project as an element of a long-term research. It’s a process that I adapted in the nineties and again with the creation of my company ‘Dailylife’.
When I am engaged in a work, I am engaged in the poetic and political process of the work. Photography to me means, illuminating the intimate to try and express the universal.
I present my work through books, exhibitions. monumental installations, digital media, films and recently videomaping;
My party is humanistic rather than social.
Biography
I was born on January 17th, 1960. At the age of four, I received a Polaroid camera as a gift.
The photographic process never ceases to fascinate me. There is this magic at the crossroads of technical excellence and the mystery of restitution that amazes me every time.
After finishing art school in France, my focus turned to the human being and the world that was around me. As a press photographer, I was quickly driven by the desire for commitment and the need to travel. At 25, for 7 years, I documented the actions of Médecins Sans Frontières throughout the world. I documented the lives of the refugees, people facing conflicts, and the victims of natural disasters.
At 33, I created the artistic company Dailylife. Inspired by the FSA* project, I initiated a photographic and anthropological research in Europe and in many other parts of the world. This research still questions the relationship between art and society where. Each project is like a chapter of this long-term exploration.
In more than 80 countries, I have explored the issues of longevity, migration, gender, inequality, poverty, and adolescence. Today my focus is on humans and nature.
My work is presented in books, installations, photographic films, interactive works, and now video mapping.
Through Dailylife, I have responded to commissions from cultural institutions such as the European Capitals of Culture (Lille and Cork), the British Council, the French Institute, European and international institutions and art centers.
